What makes a successful consultant? The 3 traits behind $8.1M

What makes a successful consultant?

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Do I really have what it takes to be a successful consultant?” — you’re not alone.

Behind the impressive résumés and decades of experience, I’ve seen the truth: smart, accomplished women battling imposter syndrome. Craving clarity and certainty. Hoping to reduce the risk to zero before they take one step forward.

“What if I leave and it doesn’t work?” “What if I waste time, money, and energy — and still fall short?” “What if no one needs what I offer?”

After helping nearly 800 women build thriving consulting businesses, I can tell you this: the fear is normal. But the doubt is wrong.

You do have what it takes. And the ones who go on to replace — and even exceed — their corporate income share just three traits.

But before I tell you what they are, let me show you what’s possible.

Meredith, a legal consultant, launched her business after losing her husband — and still brought in over $440K in her first year with just a few clients.

Claudia, an HR consultant, left Accenture after 26 years, landed her first client through her network, and made $145K from that first engagement.

Misty, a financial transactions expert, landed a $60K client within one month of launching her business.

None of them had a perfect plan. What they had were these three characteristics: expertise, execution, engagement. Let’s break them down, so you can start building them now.

Expertise: why you’re not starting from scratch

If you’ve spent 15+ years solving complex problems, leading high-stakes projects, and getting results for demanding organizations, here’s the truth: you are already sitting on a goldmine of marketable expertise.

You’re not starting from square one. You’re starting from strength — from a career filled with results, experience, and insight companies are actively searching for.

So why do so many women second-guess themselves? Because they’ve never had to own their expertise outside a job title. They’ve been behind the scenes, not out front.

They think, “Everyone knows how to do this.” (They don’t.) They wonder, “Would anyone actually pay me for this?” (They will.)

What successful consultants do differently: they identify their most valuable skills and results, they niche down to solve a specific problem for a specific buyer, and they confidently position themselves as the go-to expert in that space.

Companies don’t hire consultants to be generalists. They want a specialist who can solve the exact issue they’re facing, now.

The fastest way to replace your income isn’t reinvention. It’s monetization. You don’t need more credentials. You don’t need to pivot into something trendy. You need to package what you already know, and start using it to serve.

Execution: follow the plan. Launch imperfectly. Learn in real time.

Success doesn’t come from learning everything. It comes from doing the right things, in the right order, with the right support.

Inside ThriveHive Passport, we see two types of women. Type One shows up, trusts the process, and follows our proven system — the same one that helped our women secure $8.1 million in new consulting contracts last year alone. They get client-ready fast, build momentum, and get into service.

Type Two tries to DIY it. They create their own templates, jump around the curriculum, and skip the foundational work. They stay stuck in planning mode. They spin. They stall. And they wonder why it’s not clicking.

Here’s what we teach inside Passport: B- work beats no work. Not because we don’t believe in excellence — we do. But because excellence is built with clients, not in a vacuum.

Your offer gets stronger once you’re selling it. Your message gets clearer after a few real conversations. Your process gets refined every time you deliver it.

I often ask our women: “Have you ever launched a project in corporate that was A+ from day one?” The answer is always no. You launched. You learned. You iterated. It’s the same here.

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is progress. Because once you’re in motion, everything shifts, from your confidence to your income.

Engagement: get in the arena and start the conversations that lead to clients

You’ve got your offer. You’ve nailed your messaging. You know who you want to work with. Now comes the part that separates dabblers from doers: will you engage?

Because no matter how great your offer is, if the right people don’t hear it, your business won’t grow.

Engagement is the act of putting yourself in close proximity to your ideal clients and telling them how you can help. We call this the MOM Framework:

1. Meet your people

Show up where your buyers are already spending time.

2. Offer value

Share insights, stories, and content that demonstrate your credibility.

3. Make offers to help

Confidently invite them into conversations, calls, and proposals.

You can choose any strategy you like, because they all work when done consistently: engaging with your audience on LinkedIn, sending warm outreach messages, reconnecting with past colleagues, joining associations or networking groups, attending or speaking at events, hosting a roundtable or webinar, publishing thought leadership content, or asking for introductions and referrals.

Engagement is a skill. And like any skill, it gets easier the more you do it. And yes, it can feel vulnerable.

As Brené Brown says: “If you’re not in the arena getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback.”

The arena is where the magic happens. It’s where courage gets built. It’s where clients say yes. No engagement means no business. But if you’re showing up, reaching out, and learning — you’re either winning, or you’re learning to get better. And that’s a win either way.

What makes a successful consultant?

Yes. You do.

You don’t need a new title, a new degree, or a five-year plan. You just need a way forward.

Because every successful consultant I know didn’t wait until she felt 100% ready. She got clear on three things: expertise she already had, execution through a proven process, and engagement that led to real conversations with real clients.

And remember — you were made to thrive.
