There is never a clean moment to start a consulting business. There is only the moment you stop waiting for one. Here’s why deferred living costs more than the risk you’re avoiding — and three ways to break the pattern this week.

For years, we’ve been fed a lie. Put your head down. Work hard. Sacrifice. And someday, it’ll all be worth it.

You’ll finally take that trip. Go to your daughter’s recital. Sleep through the night. Feel healthy again. Feel you again.

But here’s the truth no one tells high-achieving women: “someday” is a moving target. And the longer you wait, the more life you trade away.

The life you’re working so hard for? You’re missing it.

We see it every week in our coaching calls. Brilliant, capable women sitting in corner offices or back-to-back Zoom calls, quietly wondering: is this it?

They’ve got the title. The team. The compensation. The inbox full of calendar invites. And yet…

• They haven’t had a real conversation with their partner in weeks.
• They feel disconnected from their kids — like they’re showing up physically but missing it emotionally.
• Their bodies are breaking down — adrenal fatigue, high blood pressure, migraines, insomnia.
• The things that used to bring them joy now feel like obligations.

And still, they tell themselves: just push through a little longer. Just get through this quarter. Just wait until the bonus hits.

But here’s what happens next: the bonus hits. The title changes. The stock vests. And nothing else changes.

What does waiting to start actually cost you?

Every “someday” story is a math equation in disguise:

• Trading dinner with your family for another late night with a VP who won’t remember it next week.
• Trading a long walk outside for another status meeting that could’ve been an email.
• Trading time with your parents — while they’re still healthy — for another 60-hour workweek.
• Trading your spark, your energy, and your sense of purpose for… what? A performance rating?

The question isn’t what this life costs you financially. It’s what it costs you emotionally, physically, and relationally. Because that’s the currency you’re really spending.

You can work hard without working yourself into the ground

Let me be clear: this isn’t about quitting or coasting. You’ve worked hard for your success, and I know you’re proud of that.

This is about refusing to spend your entire life climbing a ladder that’s leaning against the wrong wall. Here’s what doing it differently can look like:

• You design your business around your life — not the other way around.
• You price your expertise so two clients could replace your paycheck.
• You finally take the vacation, the break, the breath.
• You build something you own — not something that owns you. You don’t have to wait for “someday.”

When should you start a consulting business?

1. Define your “enough.”

Figure out what it actually takes to support your ideal lifestyle — not the inflated version society says you should want. What would allow you to breathe?

2. Schedule life first.

Block your vacations, date nights, and slow mornings before you commit to anything else. Protect those like board meetings, because they are.

3. Make a “not someday” list.

Write down 5 things you refuse to delay any longer. Then schedule one this month. If it’s launching your consulting business, let’s make that your first “not someday.”

Final thought

What if the thing you’ve been chasing isn’t actually the thing that will set you free? What if freedom, fulfillment, and joy don’t live at the end of the grind, but in the decision to step off the hamster wheel today?
