Your consulting pitch: The exact message that lands clients

What should a consulting pitch include?

A consulting pitch is not a job interview answer. It’s a five-part structure that tells a prospect what you do, why it matters to them, and what to do next. Here’s the framework, and exactly where to use it.

How will you answer the question, “What do you do?”

Bain & Company found that while 80% of companies believe they deliver a superior value proposition, only 8% of customers agree — proof that most messages simply aren’t relevant enough to get the buyer to take action.

Why? Because most pitches fall into one (or more) of these traps: complex messages with too much jargon and not enough clarity, déjà vu messages with generic claims your buyer’s heard a dozen times, or mixed messages that try to say everything and end up saying nothing clearly.

But here’s what most people get wrong: most women think you should start with creating a website or posting on LinkedIn. But that’s actually the last step.

Here’s the truth: your message isn’t just one part of your business — it’s the engine behind all of it. When your message is clear and compelling, everything else becomes easier to write, and more effective at converting.

What should a consulting pitch include?

A great message helps people understand your value in minutes, not months. Here’s the 5-part framework to create a message that lands:

1. Definer — what we do

Start by clearly stating who you help and how. Skip the jargon. Be specific and benefit-driven. Example: “ThriveHive is how entrepreneurial women turn their real-world professional experience into a thriving consulting business.”

2. Eye-Opener — grab their attention

This is where you reframe the problem. Help them see what’s really holding them back and why your approach is different.

3. Solution pillars — the 3 keys to success

Break down your approach. Make it memorable and benefit-focused — three things that move someone off square one:

  • More Direction — every decision is easier when you know what motivates you and where your business needs to go.
  • More Action — you’ll move faster when you know your next steps and have proven frameworks guiding the way.
  • More Collaboration — you’ll never go it alone when you’re surrounded by experienced mentors and a supportive community.

4. Reason to believe — proof it works

Now it’s time to show that your process delivers — real numbers, real outcomes, real client results.

5. Action step — what to do next

Every pitch should end with a clear, confident invitation to the next step.

Where do you use a consulting elevator pitch?

You didn’t create your pitch just to keep it in a Google Doc. You created it to open doors, start conversations, and sign clients. Here’s how to start using it right away, where it matters most.

1. Use it in your outreach and follow-up

Intro emails: reaching out to a warm lead, a referral, or someone you met at an event? Drop your 5-point pitch right into the body of the message. Pro tip: add a P.S. with a link to book a call.

2-page overview: turn your pitch into a polished 1-2 page PDF that includes your offer, your process, proof points, and a clear next step. It looks professional, builds instant trust, and is easy to forward.

2. Use it across your online presence

LinkedIn About section: one of the first places potential clients look, and one of the best places to drop your Definer, Eye-Opener, and Pillars. Replace resume-style bios with a compelling, client-focused message.

Pinned post or intro video: create a short text post or record a 60-second video of you delivering your pitch, and pin it to the top of your profile. It’s the fastest way to make a first impression that sticks.

Website or lead magnet: use your pitch at the top of your homepage, inside your free downloads, or at the beginning of your webinar script. Start with clarity, so people stay to learn more.

3. Use it in live conversations and sales situations

Networking events and conferences: when someone says, “So, what do you do?” — don’t ramble. Use a simplified version of your 5-point pitch to instantly position your value. Just the Definer plus Pillars is often enough for casual intros.

Sales calls and proposals: start proposals or sales conversations with your pitch, before diving into the deliverables or pricing. Framing your value first makes the rest of the conversation easier.

Don’t wing it — your message is your brand

Here’s the truth: you can’t afford to wing it when it comes to your messaging. Even if you’re just starting out, your pitch is what makes you look like the real deal — a polished, professional consultant who’s ready to deliver real results.

One of our Passport grads was preparing for her first post-corporate networking event. She felt nervous, but she had one advantage: a clear, compelling pitch.

When it came time for introductions, she stood up and confidently delivered her 5-point pitch. Afterwards, three people came up to her and said: “That was the clearest, most compelling intro I’ve heard all day.”

She left with two meetings booked, and a big boost of confidence. The right message helps you show up like a seasoned consultant, even if you’re just getting started.

Your pitch is more than a message — it’s your magnet. Use it often. Say it with confidence. And watch what happens when people finally get what you do, and why they need it.

And remember — you were made to thrive.
